Not Every Transmission Problem Is a Rebuild

A transmission that slips or shifts hard sounds like the most expensive problem a car can have. Often it isn't. Low or burnt fluid, a failing solenoid, a sensor feeding the computer bad data, or a software fault can all feel like the transmission is going. At DrivePoint we test first, then tell you what we found. Call (302) 803-3906 and describe what it's doing.

Owner Tyler Zeigler runs the shop, so the person explaining the repair is the person responsible for it. If your transmission does need major work, you'll hear why, what the options are, and what it costs before anything comes apart.

Signs Your Transmission Needs a Look

Catch these early and the fix is usually smaller.

01

Slipping or Flaring

The engine revs up but the car doesn't pull, or RPMs jump between gears. That is the clutch packs or bands not holding, often from low or worn-out fluid.

02

Harsh or Late Shifts

A clunk into gear or a shift that comes long after it should. Solenoids, a dirty valve body or a bad speed sensor are common causes, and not all of them mean a rebuild.

03

Delay Into Drive or Reverse

A pause of a second or two after you move the shifter. It usually starts small and gets worse.

04

Red or Burnt-Smelling Fluid on the Ground

Transmission fluid is red when it's healthy. A leak or dark, burnt-smelling fluid needs attention before the transmission runs low.

05

Warning Light or Limp Mode

Many cars protect themselves by locking into one gear when the computer sees a transmission fault. We read the stored codes to see what triggered it.

How a Transmission Diagnosis Works Here

  1. 01

    Codes and Fluid First

We scan the transmission computer and check the fluid level, color and smell. Those two steps rule a lot in or out.

  2. 02

    Road Test and Inspection

We drive it to feel the problem you described, then inspect for leaks, mounts, linkage and wiring.

  3. 03

    A Straight Answer

You get what we found, what it will take to fix, and whether it makes sense for your car. No work starts without your OK.

Frequently asked questions

Is it safe to keep driving with a slipping transmission?
Short trips are usually possible, but slipping creates heat, and heat is what destroys transmissions. The longer it slips, the bigger the eventual repair. Get it looked at soon.
Do you rebuild transmissions?
Call (302) 803-3906 and tell us the vehicle and the symptoms. We diagnose it first; if it needs a rebuild or replacement, we explain the options before any work starts.
Will a fluid change fix my shifting problem?
Sometimes, when the fluid is low or worn out. On a transmission that is already damaged, new fluid will not repair it. That is why we check the fluid and read the codes before recommending anything.
How often should transmission fluid be changed?
It depends on the vehicle. Some manufacturers list an interval, others call the fluid "lifetime." Towing, heat and stop-and-go driving shorten its life. We can check the condition of yours and tell you where it stands.
